Savory scones you say? Absolutely! Packed with cheesy, spicy, herby flavor! Perfect with soup, stew, salad & pasta. Serves as handy little sandwich breads as well. Fun to make so include your loved ones or even those you would like to become your loved ones…baking makes fine friends 😉

Ingredients

3 cups unbleached all purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 1/2 tsp salt

2 Tbsp onion powder

1 Tbsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

1 stick  butter; frozen & grated

1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, grated

1 cup bacon, fried and chopped into bits

1 jalapeno, seeded & chopped

1 teaspoon dried or 1/4 cup Italian or Mexican herbs; crushed or chopped

1 1/2 cups buttermilk *no buttermilk? Add 1 Tbsp vinegar to equal amounts of whole milk

kosher salt, herbs and 1/4 cup shredded cheddar—for topping

**Half the ingredients for 8 scones

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Sift together dry ingredients. Add grated butter and mix with fingers until crumbly. Add cheese, jalapeno and bacon. Mix well. Stir in buttermilk until just blended. Divide dough in half and flatten into about 1/2 inch thick round. Score and cut each round into 8 pieces

Place on greased cookie sheet about 1 inch apart, sprinkle with salt and herbs. Bake at 400 degrees for approximately 20-25 minutes. Sprinkle with additional shredded cheddar before cooling. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Makes 16 scones.
