    Interesting that apple is number one. It could be, in part, down to the Head West movement. As the covered wagon trains headed West in search of land and prosperity in the Nineteenth Century one of the most important ingredients was dried apple.
    According to Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, it was a staple, obviously because it was one of the great long journey survivors. It was also fairly cheap to purchase back East. It didn’t take up too much precious room and was a relatively sweet suppliment to counter, what would have been somewhat boring, everyday fare.
    On arrival the new settlers would still rely upon the dried apple since they had to go a full season before having any fresh produce. The apple continued its importance with newish states such as Washinton, it today being by far the number one grower, with California coming in a distant third.
